  • ". . . no one has ever helped my child learn to write. I have never ever seen him put that much on a piece of paper. Thank you so much. . . He likes it here and talks about his homework and class work. He is even reading his essays out loud to everyone in the family."
    -- BOCS parent
  • ". . . As a parent and Compton resident, I support BOCS model of Re-Inventing Schools (RISC), working on a platform of performance based advancement rather than time based. I feel the principal, staff, and administrators are putting forth a fantastic effort in directing our children to become self-motivated, and competent learners, that strive for performance excellence through individual accountability."

Quotes

  • "We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning."
  • "We need to internalize this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent."
  • "A highly-educated and skilled workforce will be the key not only to individual opportunity, but to the overall success of our economy as well. We cannot be satisfied until every child in America-and I mean every child-has the same chances for a good education that we want for our own children."
  • "We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible."
  • "We know that education is everything to our children's future. We know that they will no longer just compete for good jobs with children from Indiana, but children from India and China and all over the world. We know the work and the studying and the level of education that requires."
  • "And I've said this all across the country when I talk to parents about education, government has to fulfill its obligations to fund education, but parents have to do their job too. We’ve got to turn off the TV set, we’ve got to put away the video game, and we have to tell our children that education is not a passive activity, you have to be actively engaged in it. If we encourage that attitude and our community is enforcing it, I have no doubt we can compete with anybody in the world."
  • "Michelle and I are here only because we were given a chance at an education. I will not settle for an America where some kids don’t have that chance."
  • "Our public education system is the key to opportunity for millions of children and families. It needs to be the best in the world. Of particular concern is the growing achievement gap between middle and low-income students, which has continued to expand despite some overall national achievement gains."
  • "The belief that we belong on the cutting edge of innovation, that's an idea as old as America itself. We're a nation of thinkers, dreamers, believers in a better tomorrow."
  • "I've said this many times -- if we are recognizing athletic achievement, then we should also be recognizing academic achievement and science achievement."
